Reasons for Tears while chopping onions


Onions Release the chemical irritant known as syn-propanethial-S-oxide, which stimulates the eye glands called lachrymal glands so they release tears.

Just find out the scientific Reason:

When we cut an onion, Lachrymatory-factor synthase is released into the air.

The synthase enzyme converts the amino acids sulfoxides of the onion into sulfenic acid.

The unstable sulfenic acid rearranges itself into syn-ropanethial-S-oxide.

Syn-propanethial-S-oxide gets into the air and comes in contact with our eyes. The lachrymal glands become irritated and produces the tears!

Below are few tips which help in get rid of tears during chopping.
See that your knife is sharp.
Try to put the cut piece of the onion on the other side down.
Keep a slice of onion in the space between ears and head.
