After coming back from a massive defeat in the last test in Bangladesh, England thought they were going to be further humiliated in Indian Test Series with playing their first match of the 5 tests series in Rajkot, Gujarat. To their surprise the first ever test match on this pitch was perfect for batting and nothing much on the offer for spinners in early of the match.
England cruised to an amazing 537 runs in their first innings with some extraordinary batting by the centurions Joe Root, Moeen Ali and Ben Stokes and left India a daunting task in their hands. And Indian batsmen replied well with their batting by amassing 488 runs by giving England just 49 runs lead. Everyone thought the match has swung in India’s favour however Alastair Cook shattered their hopes with an outstanding 130 runs in England’s second innings, nicely accompanied by the teenage debutant Haseeb Hameed and took the game away from India. And the hosts needed 310 runs to win the match with some 50 odd overs remaining in the day. India needed brilliance of the Captain Virat Kohli to savour a draw for his team and save all the blushes. In the end it was quite an amazing test match it has been. England have began the series on a high note, how India is going to answer in the remaining of the series is going to be exciting.
And this is how some England Cricketers from past and present reacted after the match:
